How-to’s: Felt & Straw Hat
Ever wondered how a Felt or Straw hat is made? Well wonder no further.
On our recent visit to China, we thought it would be useful to create a step-by-step guide to show you an insight into making each hat.
Ready made hoods are dipped into buckets of glue to stiffen the hat’s.
A machine is then used to alter the size of the hood by using a steam process.
The hood is then transferred over to another machine which is used to set the hat into a blocked shape.
The hat is now ready to be moulded, a machine is used to press the hat into shape.
To Finish, the hat is rubbed with sandpaper and wax leaving it with a silky finish and last brush to remove any excess felt.
Similar process to Felt Hat’s, Dipped in glue to stiffen and steamed to be moulded. Edges are then trimmed and sent to the sewing room.
A plastic band is then attached to bind the edges. Sweatbands and care labels are also then sewn into the Trilby.
The hat is then sent for a final moulding to finish their shape.
